Erin's Review of Underneath, by Michael Cargill

My Rating: didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it (my current rating) it was amazing
Look at the person sitting just across from you. It doesn’t matter whether they’re a loved one, a friend, or a complete stranger.

Now look at their face. Are they happy? Are they sad? Or are they angry? Can you even tell?

How well do you actually know the people closest to you?

Have you ever seen the real person that lies just underneath what you see…?

Since starting this blog with Lily, both of us have started talking to and getting to know a lot of Indie authors.  Michael Cargill easily passes as one of my favourites!  He is down to earth, fun loving, and boy can he make you laugh!!  Not to mention how much I love his writing....

Underneath is Michael's first novel, having published a few short stories, he took a flying leap into the crazy world of novels...and he did it with a BANG!  I have always had a facination with how British people write, I find myself giggling at the words they use, such as 'slug' , and 'rubbish'.

This novel is unlike any that I have ever read (and I have certainly read my fair share of them).  Though it started off a bit slow, Cargill does an impecable job at keeping the reader completely engaged, he lets you into the character's minds slowly and allows you to get to know each one as if they are your neighbour.

The main character, Hugh, is undeniably CREEPY!  I absolutely LOVE reading books about people who have odd behaviours or mental instability.  (The human brain is one of my many passions)  I found myself wanting to know more about Hugh and the reasons behind his creepyness.

The multiple personalities of Hugh that you see throughout this novel were done so very well.  After reading this book I found myself sitting on the city bus watching people. As well as you think you know someone, do you really know them at all?  Do you know what goes on underneath?

I recommend this book to all!!  It is a quick easy read, and you certainly wont regret it.
